Reykholt – Borgarfjörður Highland and History Tour

Saturday June 16 at 13:00-20:00

This tour is the best way to see and experience just how many the contrasts are, from lush valleys and grown areas to barren highlands.  Along the way, the most spectacular waterfalls and scenery one can imagine.  Added bonuses are the great sagas of Iceland and the countries’  history. The now peaceful farming district of Borgarfjörður, home of 13th-century scholar Snorri Sturluson, was, centuries ago, home to violent and tragic events that changed the balance of power between chieftains in their struggles to gain dominance.  First stop is the new Safnahus in Borgarnes, then Borg in Myrar, Snorrastofa in Reykholt and finally Hraunfossar waterfalls which consist of countless springs of clear water that emerge from under the edge of the lava field Hallmundarhraun and flow into the river Hvítá. Dinner on the way back to Reykjavik.

For those interested in the sagas, we recommend that you read the following in connection with the tour:
Egils saga, chapters; 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 40, 58, 59, 60, 78, 81, 82
Gunnlaugs saga, chapters; 2 and 3
Laxdæla saga, chapter; 51

Thórsmörk Nature Reserve

Sunday June 17 2007 at 09:00-19:00

We drive along the south coast of Iceland, our first stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall. This waterfall is about 60 m high and it’s relatively easy to walk all the way around it. From there we take the rugged track into the magnificent Thórsmörk ("Thor's woods") nature reserve. It’s one of the most beautiful places in Iceland, situated between three glaciers (Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Tindafjallajökull) and surrounded by natural boundaries like mountains, ice caps and glacier rivers. For these reasons it has often been difficult to reach, limiting access to four-wheel drive vehicles which, in order to reach it, have to ford more than 20 brooks and streams. Thórsmörk is a place of breathtaking landscapes and a fauna of great variety. There we will take a short hike and enjoy the nature before returning to Reykjavik. Stop for lunch and refreshments on the way. Not included in price.

Price per person: ISK 9.900
